What To Do in New York City on a Cold, Rainy or Sweltering Hot Day

On our last trip to NYC we faced some less than ideal weather conditions. It was cold, rainy, and even a bit snowy. So we checked out some of the best places to explore when the weather tries to put a damper on your day. We ended up having an amazing time, and we hope that if you find yourself in the same predicament you’ll have just as much fun as we did enjoying some of the indoor activities this fantastic city has to offer.

Experience some of New York’s best food

Manhattan alone is home to over 10,000 restaurants so there’s definitely plenty of options. For a fun casual dining experience, definitely check out the food hall Eataly. From coffee to sandwiches and even wine, pasta, or pizza, there’s a lot to check out if you’ve never been to an Eataly location before.

If it’s chilly out, stop in at one of the Xian’s Famous Foods (with multiple locations throughout the city) and grab a steaming hot bowl of hand-pulled noodles with broth. It’s a must-go on our list every time we visit.

Another unique spot featuring restaurants, food stalls and shops is Chelsea Market. They’ve got everything from tacos to sushi to freshly made donuts.

Check out a museum

New York City is home to some of the most famous museums in the country. Why not spend a day checking out a few. The most popular museums include:

  • American Museum of Natural History
  • Metropolitan Museum of Art
  • 9/11 Memorial Museum
  • MOMA
  • Guggenheim
  • Museum of the City of New York
  • The Morgan Library & Museum
  • New York Transit Museum

Enjoy New York City Shopping

From boutiques and thrifting to department stores like Century 21 and Macy’s there’s plenty of shopping in the city. Speaking of Macy’s, check out the iconic, world’s largest Macy’s located in Herald Square. We even like to hit up the Marshall’s and TJ Maxx in Manhattan because they often offer high end designer brands like that we don’t see in our local stores.

Libraries and more

Fancy some literature? Check out the 18 miles of books at Strand bookstore or admire the architecture of the New York Public Library.

Last but not least on our list, wander the iconic Grand Central Terminal and look for the Whispering Gallery.

So don’t let the weather get you down! Get out and see what the city has to offer! Still not convinced? Check out our video to see some of the things we enjoyed on a cold and rainy day in the city.
